
Rwimi Town Council in Bunyangabu district has received a major boost in agricultural development following the commissioning of a Shs. 427 million coffee processing plant aimed at improving coffee value addition and farmers’ incomes.
The facility, known as the Gatyanga Coffee Processing Plant, was officially commissioned today by State Minister of Local Government, Victoria Businge Rusoke. The event was attended by several district leaders, including Chief Administrative Officer Haji Nsubuga Isa Hood and Deputy Resident District Commissioner Robert Kamuntu.
Speaking at the commissioning, Rusoke emphasized the importance of utilizing the new facility to enhance local economic growth. She urged farmers and community members to increase coffee production to ensure the plant operates at full capacity.
The Gatyanga plant has the ability to process up to 2.5 tons of coffee per hour, positioning it as a key driver in improving efficiency and quality in coffee handling within the area.

Local leaders echoed the minister’s call, encouraging farmers not only to grow more coffee but also to focus on maintaining high quality standards to compete favorably in the market.
The project was funded under the Local Economic Growth Support Project (LEGS), a government initiative aimed at strengthening local economies through strategic investments in value addition and production infrastructure.
Residents expressed optimism that the new facility will reduce post-harvest losses, create employment opportunities, and increase household incomes in Rwimi and surrounding areas.
